93. 1608 The Status of Hong Kong Women in The 19th and 20th Centuries.

This paper will examine the status of Hong Kong women for the two-hundred year period (approximate), covering the 1800 and 1900's. In order to achieve a concise and fair assessment, this paper will focus on particular areas. Marriage, the mooi-jai, and concubinage will be included as focus point which reveal the inferior status of women in historical and contemporary Hong Kong. Secondly, the issue of work is crucial area of inquiry to pursue. The relationship between women and the hierarchical system in which they live will be covered. This will include the relationship between women and capitalist colonialism; women and post-colonial capitalism, and the patriarchy. A brief section on the socio-cultural aspects of the status of women, particularly the images of women, follows. 94. 1682 How has the changeover of Hong Kong in 1997 affected the national identity of the H.K. English population?

This paper will make a strong case for Hong Kong as one of the world's only true cosmopolitan centres. A premium will be placed on its history and the dominance of the economy. The study will move to look at how identity in Hong Kong may have changed, paying particular attention to the English population. Efforts will be made to provide a well-rounded approach to the situation that touches on a variety of aspects of life. It will be argued that the primary fears have been China's systematic abuse of human rights. Examples will be used to legitimize these fears. The importance of economics in Hong Kong life will be touched upon, and the behaviour of the government with regard to the economy in the post-retrocession period will be detailed. The final sections of the paper will mesh this authors own research with the existing body of knowledge. Surveys and other field work have been conducted in order to gain a primary account of the situation. This research has concluded that there have been some adjustment problems, but for the most part it is 'business as usual' for Chinese and British in Hong Kong alike. The final part of the paper will reflect on the most pertinent findings and offer appropriate conclusions. 39 pgs. 76 f/c. 26b.
