8. 4133 The Modernity of Francisco Goya's "The Third of May", 1808 (1814).

This paper will argue that, while The Third of May, 1808 may seem to demand contextualization in terms of historic political and cultural forces - particularly the Napoleonic wars, nationalism and Romanticism - close analysis of the work would suggest that it is best appreciated in isolation from its immediate political and cultural context. From this perspective, Goya's The Third of May, 1808 is a painting, not of Romantic heroism or of Spanish patriotism, but of simple human suffering in the face of political violence and oppression. As such, it is a painting whose modernity and universal resonance transcends the narrow context of its creation. 8 pgs. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

9. 4275 Art and Architecture in Society: Production and Reproduction in Historical Contexts.

John Ruskin and Charles Jencks represent different historical conceptions of art and architecture. Ruskin was in the Victorian-age of England, and Jencks is in the more erratic eclecticism of the 20th century. Each critic offers particular views on the role of the artist in relation to society, however Ruskin's can be understood as one that desires to control the artist, and Jencks recognizes that art is invariably a free expression of the individual. The responsibility is thus different: Ruskin believes the artist is responsible to society, and Jencks believes that society has a responsibility to the artist, in that artists represent a challenge to public perspectives, and this challenge is always reflective of social change. 5 pgs. 10. 9503 Mechanical Reproduction and the Fostering of Graphic Incoherence.

This essay discusses how mechanical reproduction has resulted in the retreat from reality. The techno-formulation of reality, which is the mechanical reproduction of images, has served to change human perception. The problem of prime time television serves as an example of this reality, since it fosters graphic incoherence. 3 pgs. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

13. 9803 Plato, Tolstoy, Eliot and Art.

This essay discusses Plato's opposition to the imitative arts, including painting, and how he wanted them excluded from the State. He held this position because, in his view, the arts presented people with mere appearances instead of real things. The paper then examines Leo Tolstoy's and T.S. Eliot's views. Tolstoy felt that art expressed the emotion of life. Eliot believed that good art was a reflection of an understanding of the past. In this way, both Eliot and Tolstoy showed Plato's view to be very narrow in scope. 10 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
